Our story

Northline Studio started in 2013 in a shared workshop in Hackney. Founder Alice Mercer was renovating one Victorian terrace at a time, and every client said the same thing: the hardest part was keeping the designer, the builder and the trades moving in the same direction.

So we built a studio that holds all three. Designers sit beside project managers, and the site teams are people we know and work with every week. That closeness is why our quotes hold, our programmes stay realistic and the finishing is consistent.

Small by choice. We run a limited number of projects so every home gets senior attention.
Honest about money. Allowances are explained, variations are priced before work, and there are no surprise extras.
Serious about craft. We care how a shadow gap meets a floor and how a door closes.

Today the team is eighteen strong and still independent. We work across London, mostly on homes we can walk to from the studio.

How we grew

A one-woman studio

Alice started Northline from a shared workshop in Hackney, renovating one house at a time with a small group of trusted trades.

The Islington studio

The team moved into a small studio near Prebend Street and added a dedicated design room for samples and drawings.

Build brought in house

Northline formed its own construction team so design and building could sit under one roof and one project lead.

Every project follows the same clear rhythm:

Listen first. We survey the building and ask how you want to live.
Design with the budget. Cost is part of the drawing, not an afterthought.
Fix the price. Trades, materials and allowances are listed before work starts.
Run one site. A single project lead coordinates every trade.
Hand over properly. Snagging, care guides and warranties come as standard.
